Open Doors for Refugees’ annual community potluck picnic took place on Sunday, June 21 at Elver Park. This year’s event ran on Father’s Day, with inclement weather, and at a new location. Despite these factors, at least 200 members of the Madison community came together to celebrate refugee families!
Tani Diakite and the Afrofunkstars kicked things off with some energetic blues music. Gloria Hays joined in, then took over with her interactive musical show. Finally, Cumbia Cachaca brought the show home with their unique blend of Caribbean and electronic music.
Lots of delicious dishes were available, some donated by restaurants, and some brought by our guests. Thanks to Ahan, Banzo, Madison Sourdough, Ian’s Pizza, Trader Joes, and Woodmans for their contributions!
There were so many activities this year, including tons of opportunities for kids! Activities were offered by Madison Children’s Museum, Aldo Leopold Nature Center, the MSCR Activity Van, Madison Public Library, Madison Mehndi henna art, Literacy Network, The African Center, Jewish Social Services, Catholic Charities, Madison-Rafah’s Read Palestine, League of Women Voters, and Warda Bayda’s crafts. There was also bookmark making, flower arranging, beaded jewelry making, bubble blowing, and a giant parachute.
